Diocesan School for Girls - Chapel of our Glorified Lord & St Barnabas Chapel

St Barnabas’ Chapel is a scheduled Category A historic building located on the Diocesan School for Girls campus in Epsom. Constructed between 1863 and 1866 in the Gothic Revival style, later known as Selwyn Gothic, it is a rare and highly intact example of early colonial vernacular architecture in Aotearoa New Zealand. The adjacent Chapel of Our Glorified Lord, completed in 1922, forms a cohesive ecclesiastical ensemble.

Both chapels have been integral to the spiritual, educational, and community life of the school for over a century, remaining in active use for worship, assemblies, ceremonies, and gatherings of more than 250 people.

The project secures their continued use by achieving 100% New Building Standard, significantly exceeding regulatory requirements.

A rigorous conservation-based approach guided the restoration and seismic strengthening works. Original fabric was retained and repaired wherever practicable, with new structural interventions discreetly integrated to minimise visual and physical impact. The project ensures the long-term protection, performance, and ongoing relevance of these important heritage buildings.
